History of the department

The Department of Music has been a part of the Faculty of Education since its establishment in 1946 and for over half a century of its existence it has educated thousands of qualified music teachers for all types and levels of schools. Among the teachers and graduates of this department are a whole range of figures of international scholarly and artistic renown.

An important activity of the department with a tradition going back to the 1960´s is regular international music and pedagogical conferences known as MUSICA VIVA IN SCHOLA. They are organized in cooperation with the Czech Music Association (Česká hudební společnost), they loosely continue the ISME´s (International Society for Music Education) activities and their topics always emphasise topical areas of problems related to teaching music.

Activity of the department

Scholarly, professional and publication activities of the members of the department focus, apart from writing materials for studies, textbooks and monographs, on the area of axiology of music, aesthetics, semiotics, etc., and they strive through specific empirical research in all fields of music and musical culture to portray the dynamism of transformations of social functions of music in the present-day world and in the life of a young person. (B. Crha, B. Knopová, J. Kučerová, M. Sedláček).

The department´s profile is formed considerably by rich artistic activity focused on composition and interpretation of contemporary music (composer M. Košut, P. Hala – piano) and on authentic interpretation of old music (V. Richter – singer, I. Bartoš – organ). A review of our creative acts would include e.g. participation in prestigious festivals in the Czech Republic (Prague Spring), abroad (Bach Days / Bach Tage Hamburg), cooperation with the National Theatre in Brno, radio and television in numerous European countries as well as with important recording companies (Supraphon, Arta).
