About the department

Welcome to the pages of the Department of Social Education of the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University.

You will find the Department of Social Education on the fourth floor of the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University – Poříčí 31, Brno.

Fields of study

The Department of Social Pedagogy professionally provides several fields of study which focus on the development of social and leisure competences of students for work with various social groups within the framework of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and intervention.

The full-time mode is made up of:

• a three-year Bachelors and a follow-up Masters degree in Social Pedagogy and Free Time, accredited within the programme of study of Pedagogy,
• a three-year Bachelors degree for Social and Pedagogical Assistant, accredited within the programme of study Specialization in Pedagogy.

The combined mode includes:

• a three-year Bachelors and a follow-up Masters degree in Social Pedagogy, accredited within the programme of study of Pedagogy as well.

Apart from the defined core fields the department´s members provide additional teacher training in the fields of Carer and Leisure Instructor within the framework of the paid mode of lifelong education.

Part of the Department of Social Pedagogy is also, among others, the Centre of Multicultural Education, which organizes various activities and programmes aiming at the promotion of education of members of ethnic groups and minorities in the Czech Republic.

Study

Graduates of the field of study of Social Pedagogy receive training in pedagogical and psychological disciplines and further in the areas of anthropology, sociology, social policy, leisure activities; the Masters programme is marked by stress laid on the area of management and development of organizational competences leading to a possible application in managerial positions in a social sphere. A part of the curriculum is also practical social and psychological training and experiential preparation within the framework of differently focused training courses and practical training.

Graduates of the field of study of Social Pedagogy apply their qualifications in leisure centres and in other free time establishments, in non-profit and public organizations, and in institutions for socially disadvantaged children and citizens. They can also find jobs in institutions working with minorities as well as in social prevention establishments.
